In summer 2022, we launched the English Conversation Club (ECC) to support young Ukrainians in improving their English skills and adjusting to life in the UK. Our goal was to help them engage with the education system, make friends, and feel more at home in their new environment.

We’re proud to have two of our incredible Peppo Tutors, Pranuja Gurung and Nathaniel Carey-Taylor (pictured), leading the ECC sessions. They’ve created a welcoming, fun, and safe space which fosters learning and connection.

Why It Matters

The ECC doesn't just teaching language skills; it creates a space where young refugees can connect, feel seen, and build a sense of belonging. For many, it’s a rare chance to practice English outside the classroom while learning about UK culture in a supportive, welcoming environment.

Through engaging sessions, our students learn to express themselves, make friends, and discover academic interests they might not have considered. It’s about more than language; it’s about building confidence, forming connections, and feeling at home in a new country.

Student Voices

Our students’ writing often reflects the resilience and creativity they bring to every session:

“The beach is silent; the bright ball blinds you as it emerges, rising like a yellow lollipop on the horizon.”
“I woke up in the tundra; everything was white, and the air was really cold. The only sound was the wind.”

These glimpses into their worlds remind us why ECC is one of Peppo’s proudest projects; each week, we see students growing in confidence, self-expression, and a sense of possibility.
